Why curly hair needs a different approach

Straight hair falls roughly where it's cut. Curly and coily hair doesn't. Shrinkage means a curl can look much shorter dry than wet, and different sections of the same head often shrink by different amounts. Cut everything wet and pulled straight to one length, and the dry result can come out lopsided, shelf-shaped, or much shorter than planned.

Every curly-cutting method is a way of dealing with that problem. Some cut dry so you see where each curl actually sits. Others cut wet but use techniques that account for shrinkage.

The main methods

DevaCut (dry, curl by curl)

• Origin: Developed at the DevaChan salon, founded in 1994 by Lorraine Massey and Denis DaSilva (Beauty Launchpad). The DevaCurl brand is now owned by Henkel (DevaCurl Pro).
• How it works: The brand calls it a "no-comb dry-cutting technique for all textures." Stylists cut curl by curl and use a navigation system called the "Curl Cutting Clock."
• Good for: Clients who wear their hair curly most of the time and want shape based on how their curls actually fall.
• Stylist training (as listed in Sept. 2026): free self-paced "Product Pro" online module; 3-hour "Curl Confidence" workshop ($199); Level 1: Intro to the DevaCut (full day, $799); Level 2: The DevaCut (full day, $799, requires Level 1); "Intro to Twist-Outs" ($150). The site advertises discount codes, so prices vary (DevaCurl Pro).

Background worth knowing: DevaCurl products were the subject of a class action alleging scalp irritation and hair loss. It settled for $5.2 million in 2022 with no admission of wrongdoing (Bloomberg Law). That case was about products, not the cutting technique.

Ouidad Carve & Slice (wet)

• Origin: The Ouidad salon was founded in 1984 by Ouidad Wise (Beauty Launchpad).
• How it works: Hair is washed and cut wet. The brand describes its proprietary "carving and slicing" techniques. Clients and stylists associate the results with layers, movement and a lighter feel.
• Good for: Clients who want less bulk and more defined, lighter-feeling layers.
• Stylist training: Ouidad Certification is a 2-day hands-on course for licensed stylists only, with a prerequisite quiz. Price isn't listed publicly (Ouidad Education).

Rëzo Cut (dry, volume-focused)

• Origin: Rëzo is a salon brand with a New York flagship and an education arm, Rëzo Academy.
• How it works: A dry cut using what the academy calls the "Rose Technique." It aims for volume and blended texture. Level 2 training covers "concaving, elevating curls and creating maximum volume."
• Good for: Clients who want maximum volume and roundness.
• Stylist training: Level 1 (2 days: Rëzo Cut plus "Rëzo Lites" highlighting), Level 2 (2 days: concaving, elevation, volume), Level 3 (5-day master course with live models). An online Level 1 certification is also offered. Prices aren't listed on the course overview page (Rëzo Academy).

Independent dry cutting and hybrid approaches

Many experienced curl specialists aren't tied to a single brand. They may cut dry for shape and then refine wet, or the reverse. Texture specialist Christin Brown has said both wet and dry methods can work when stylist and client are happy, and encourages stylists to blend techniques (Beauty Launchpad).

Pintura (color for curls)

Pintura isn't a haircut. It's a highlighting technique that's often offered alongside curly cuts. The stylist hand-paints lightener onto dry curls, following each curl vertically so the color sits where the curl naturally twists and moves. Coveteur credits the technique to DevaCurl co-founder Denis DaSilva (Coveteur). Rëzo offers its own curl highlighting method, Rëzo Lites.

Side-by-side comparison

What "certified" does and doesn't mean

• It means: The stylist completed a brand's course, sometimes with a practical check.
• It doesn't mean: A state license (every stylist needs that separately), a guarantee of skill across all textures, or recent practice. Some certifications have no renewal requirement on their public pages.
• Coverage gaps: Not every stylist trained in a curl method has deep experience with every texture. If your hair is coily or kinky (often called Type 4), ask directly how much experience the stylist has with it.

• "Do you cut wet, dry or both, and why for my hair?"
• "How do you plan for shrinkage?"
• "How should I arrive?" Many dry-cut specialists want hair clean, product-light and worn in its natural state.
• "Is styling and a lesson included?"
• "How is pricing set?" Look for pricing based on time and complexity, not an unexplained "texture fee."

Red flags

• Pulling your hair taut and cutting a lot of length at once without discussing shrinkage
• Using thinning shears or razors heavily on fragile curls without explaining why
• Dismissing how you actually wear your hair day to day

How to arrive

• Follow the salon's instructions. Many dry-cut methods ask for hair down, detangled and without heavy styling products, buns or ponytails.
• Bring photos of what you like and what you don't.
